"Every loaf of bread has to start somewhere," Eric told the group. "So I began to think about all of the steps that must be taken in order to bake a loaf of bread. We begin with sowing the seed, which leads to the harvest. After the harvest there is threshing, sifting, winnowing, and burning. Finally, there is milling, mixing, proofing, fermenting, baking and cooling. Bread is the nourishing result of the combination of all these steps. When viewed through a spiritual lens, each of these steps must relate to the activity of the Christ for Jesus to call himself 'the bread of Life...'"

In discussing various parables from the Bible—the parable of the sower, the parable of the tares and wheat, the parable of the mustard seed, and the parable of the leaven that a woman hid in the meal—Eric beautifully correlated passages from the writings by Mary Baker Eddy to every Bible passage throughout his presentation. Citing Mrs. Eddy's statement that "The Bible contains the recipe for all healing" (S&H 406:1), he added that "once we have the recipe in thought, we will cast our bread on the waters and discover how this bread nourishes and sustains mankind by the understanding of the divine economy. I understand the divine economy to be the activity of the kingdom of heaven." As Eric made clear, Christian Science is the leaven.

In an interesting exercise at the end of the workshop, Eric divided the attendees into four groups and asked each group to work with one parable and see how it relates to the divine economy. This generated lively discussion, all of which underlined the connection between spiritual discernment and supply. Or as Mrs. Eddy put it, "When a hungry heart petitions the divine Father-Mother God for bread, it is not given a stone,—but more grace, obedience, and love. If this heart, humble and trustful, faithfully asks divine Love to feed it with the bread of heaven, health, holiness, it will be conformed to a fitness to receive the answer to its desire…" (Miscellaneous Writings 127:11-16)
