"We don't need to fear recession and we don’t need to predict gloom. And we can take steps right now that protect us as individuals, that protect our church and the society we live in, from aggressive suggestions of an adverse economy." So read an invitation mailed on February 27, 1975, from Eighth Church of Christ, Scientist, New York City.
In the mid 1970's, when New York City was in fiscal collapse and nearing bankruptcy, The Board of Directors of The Mother Church asked Eighth Church in New York to host a talk on the economy given by Mrs. Gertrude Bayless, CSB of New York City, to members and friends of all the Manhattan churches. High Ridge House feels it is time to reprise this remarkable talk. The executors of the Bayless estate have made this talk available to us and it was delivered by a member of her Association on Sunday, April 19, 2009, at High Ridge House.
Here's a quote from Mrs. Bayless and several references that are found in her talk:
"...Spiritual action stirs up public thought, brings out individual worth and stimulates the economy. In absolute truth, economics is one of the systems of Mind. Mind has many systems as Mrs. Eddy indicates. Spiritual economics is one of Mind's systems. Let's affirm that the capital is spiritual substance; Principle designs and produces all good and goods; Mind employs the unique talents of every idea in an interesting job; Mind values and rewards His ideas generously. And why not? It's His system and He keeps it in perfect balance, in perfect equilibrium..."
